Metal Eyelets for Curtains, Tents and Tarps: Sizes, Materials and Installation

Metal Eyelets for Curtains, Tents and Tarps: Sizes, Materials and Installation

Complete guide to metal eyelets and grommets for curtains, tents, tarps and industrial applications. Learn about sizes, materials, tools and installation techniques.

Metal eyelets (also called grommets) are essential hardware components used far beyond the textile industry. From shower curtains to industrial tarps, military tents to boat covers, eyelets provide reinforced holes for ropes, hooks, and cords. This guide covers everything you need to know about eyelets for non-garment applications.

Eyelets vs Grommets: What is the Difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a subtle distinction:

  • Eyelet: A single-piece ring that is rolled or crimped into the fabric. Common in smaller sizes.
  • Grommet: A two-piece system with a ring and washer that clamp together around the fabric. Stronger and more common in larger sizes.

For practical purposes, both provide the same function: a reinforced hole in fabric or material.

Materials: Which Metal for Which Application?

Brass Eyelets

  • Best for: Curtains, decorative applications, marine use
  • Advantages: Naturally corrosion-resistant, attractive gold tone, does not stain fabric
  • Common finishes: Natural brass, nickel-plated, antique brass

Stainless Steel Eyelets

  • Best for: Marine applications, outdoor covers, heavy-duty tarps
  • Advantages: Maximum corrosion resistance, highest strength, long lifespan
  • Common finishes: Natural stainless, polished

Iron Eyelets

  • Best for: Indoor applications, temporary covers, budget projects
  • Advantages: Lowest cost, adequate strength for light-duty use
  • Drawback: Can rust if exposed to moisture without proper plating

Installation Methods

Hand Tools (Small Projects)

For small quantities and home projects:

  1. Mark the eyelet position on the material
  2. Punch a hole using a hole punch tool (slightly smaller than the eyelet)
  3. Place the eyelet through the hole from the front
  4. Place the washer on the back
  5. Use a setting die and hammer to roll/crimp the eyelet barrel over the washer

Machine Installation (Production)

For manufacturing and large quantities, dedicated eyelet setting machines are used. These machines provide consistent pressure and perfectly formed eyelets every time. Manual press machines, motorized machines, and fully automatic machines are available depending on production volume needs.

Tips for Long-Lasting Eyelet Installation

  • Always use a washer/backing ring for heavy-duty applications
  • Match the eyelet size to your rope/cord diameter - the inner diameter should be at least 2mm larger than the cord
  • For fabric that frays, apply a small amount of fabric sealant around the hole before setting the eyelet
  • Space eyelets evenly for even load distribution (typically 15-30cm apart for tarps and covers)
  • Test with a few eyelets before setting all of them to ensure correct tool settings

Ordering Eyelets for Your Project

Eyelets are typically sold by the thousand for bulk applications. For smaller projects, sample quantities are available. When ordering, specify the inner diameter, outer diameter, material, finish, and whether you need a one-piece eyelet or two-piece grommet with washer.
