How to Replace a Broken Snap Button: Step-by-Step Repair Guide

How to Replace a Broken Snap Button: Step-by-Step Repair Guide

Learn how to replace a broken or worn snap button on your jacket, bag, or clothing. Step-by-step instructions for different snap button types with tips for a professional result.

A broken snap button on your favorite jacket or bag does not mean the item needs to be discarded. Snap buttons are designed to be replaceable, and with the right tools and technique, you can restore them to like-new condition. This guide covers the replacement process for all common snap button types.

Identifying Your Snap Button Type

Before you can replace a snap button, you need to identify which type you have:

Prong Snap Buttons

Identified by small metal prongs on the back that pierce through the fabric and fold over. Common on casual shirts and lightweight jackets. When you look at the back of the snap, you will see bent metal prongs forming a flower-like pattern.

Spring Snap Buttons

Feature a spring mechanism inside that creates the snap action. Common on leather jackets, heavy-duty outerwear, and bags. The socket side has a visible spring ring when you look closely.

Press Snap Buttons

Connect through friction between a stud and socket. Common on lightweight jackets, shirt plackets, and children clothing. They have a simpler mechanism than spring snaps.

Tools You Will Need

  • Replacement snap button set (matching type and size of the original)
  • Snap button setting tool (hand press or plier-type setter)
  • Flat screwdriver or butter knife (for removing the old snap)
  • Pliers (for removing stubborn old snaps)
  • Fabric patch (optional, for reinforcing weakened fabric)
  • Ruler or caliper (to measure the original snap size)

Step 1: Remove the Old Snap Button

Removing Prong Snap Buttons

  1. On the back side, locate the folded-over prongs
  2. Use a flat screwdriver to carefully pry each prong up
  3. Once prongs are straight, gently pull the snap button off the fabric
  4. Remove any remaining pieces from both sides of the fabric

Removing Spring/Press Snap Buttons

  1. Place the fabric on a hard surface
  2. Using a flat screwdriver, pry under the cap edge
  3. Work around the circumference, gently lifting the cap
  4. The socket/stud will separate from the post/rivet
  5. Remove all four pieces (snaps consist of 4 components)

Step 2: Prepare the Fabric

  • Inspect the hole left by the old snap button
  • If the fabric is torn or weakened, add a small fabric patch behind the area
  • For leather, the original hole is usually fine to reuse
  • For thin fabric, consider using a fabric reinforcement washer

Step 3: Install the New Snap Button

Installing Prong Snap Buttons

  1. Position the cap piece on the front of the fabric
  2. Push the prongs through the fabric from front to back
  3. Place the socket/stud ring on the back, over the prongs
  4. Using the snap setting tool, press firmly to fold the prongs over the ring
  5. Ensure all prongs are evenly folded for a secure grip

Installing Spring/Press Snap Buttons

  1. Cap Side (front of garment): Place the cap face-down on the setting tool base. Lay fabric over it. Place the socket on top. Press or strike the setting tool firmly.
  2. Stud Side (inner flap): Place the post face-down on the tool base. Lay fabric over it. Place the stud on top. Press firmly.
  3. Test the snap action - it should click firmly and hold securely

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Snap Does Not Hold / Pops Open

  • The snap may be set too loosely - remove and reset with more pressure
  • The socket spring may be damaged - replace with a new socket
  • Fabric may be too thick for the snap size - try a longer post version

Snap Is Too Tight / Hard to Open

  • The snap may be over-compressed - this usually loosens with use
  • Open and close it 20-30 times to break it in

Fabric Tearing Around the Snap

  • The fabric is too thin or weak for that snap type
  • Add a fabric reinforcement patch or washer before installing
  • Consider using a snap button with a wider base for better weight distribution

When to Seek Professional Help

Consider taking your item to a tailor or leather goods repair shop if:

  • The garment is expensive or has sentimental value
  • Multiple snaps need replacement
  • The fabric is severely damaged around the snap area
  • You need an exact match for a discontinued or unusual snap type
