1. Types of Jean Buttons

Tack Buttons (Fixed)

The classic jean button. A tack button consists of a decorative cap and a tack (nail) that pierces through the denim and locks into the cap. Once installed, it does not move. Tack buttons are the most common type of jean button used globally.

Moving Buttons (Swivel)

Also called swing buttons, these have a shank that allows the button to pivot after installation. This reduces stress on the buttonhole and makes fastening easier. Moving jean buttons are popular on premium and stretch denim.

Donut Buttons

Named for their ring shape with a recessed center, donut buttons offer a distinctive look. They are often used for vintage or retro-style denim collections.

2. Materials & Durability

Jean buttons must withstand repeated stress from fastening, unfastening, washing, and tumble drying. The most durable jean buttons are made from brass or zinc alloy with heavy electroplating.

The tack (nail) component is typically made from hardened iron or steel wire. It must be strong enough to pierce through multiple layers of waistband denim (often 4–6 layers at the overlap) without bending.

3. Standard Sizes

Jean buttons follow established size standards. The most common diameter is 17mm, which is considered the universal jean button size. Other sizes include 14mm (slim/youth jeans), 20mm (larger/workwear), and 22mm (oversized fashion statements).

The tack length varies based on the waistband thickness. Standard tack length is 7–8mm for regular denim. For thick waistbands with multiple layers, 9–10mm tacks are available.

Enamel fill: Color is added to engraved recesses, creating a colorful, eye-catching button. Popular for premium and designer denim lines.

5. Jean Rivets: The Essential Companion

No discussion of jean buttons is complete without mentioning denim rivets. These small metal fasteners reinforce stress points — pocket corners, fly base, and belt loops. They are both functional and decorative.

6. How to Order Custom Jean Buttons
