Why Plating Finish Matters in Textile Accessories

The plating finish on a snap button, rivet, or buckle determines its appearance, corrosion resistance, and skin safety. Understanding plating options helps you specify the exact look and performance your products need.

Common Plating Finishes for Textile Accessories

Nickel (Shiny Silver)

The most common finish, offering a bright mirror-like silver appearance. Excellent corrosion resistance and durability. Note: subject to REACH nickel release regulations for skin-contact applications.

Best for: General garments, industrial applications, non-skin-contact uses

Antique Brass (Vintage Gold)

A warm, aged golden-brown finish that evokes vintage and heritage aesthetics. Applied over brass base with controlled oxidation. Very popular for denim and leather goods.

Best for: Denim, leather goods, vintage-style fashion, heritage brands

Gunmetal (Dark Grey)

A dark, sophisticated grey-black finish that is increasingly popular in contemporary fashion. Created through black nickel or tin-alloy plating processes.

Best for: Modern fashion, techwear, dark-toned garments, military-inspired styles

Gold

Available in several tones from light yellow to deep gold. Can be real gold plating (for luxury applications) or gold-tone plating (for fashion). Naturally nickel-free when properly applied.

Best for: Luxury fashion, formal wear, gold-accented designs, nickel-sensitive applications

Black Nickel

A deep black finish with subtle metallic sheen. More durable than paint-based black finishes. Applied through specialized nickel plating chemistry.

Best for: Contemporary fashion, tactical/military, black-on-black designs

Matte Finishes

Any of the above finishes can be produced in matte (satin) versions through mechanical or chemical dulling processes. Matte finishes hide fingerprints and scratches better than shiny finishes.

Copper / Rose Gold

Warm pink-gold tones that have surged in popularity. Created through copper plating with protective clear coating or specialized alloy plating.

Best for: Women's fashion, premium accessories, trend-forward designs

Raw Brass (Unplated)

Some designers prefer the natural brass look, which develops a unique patina over time. Raw brass accessories must be specified as they will tarnish naturally.

Best for: Artisanal products, heritage brands, products where patina is desired

Plating Durability and Testing

Salt Spray Testing (ASTM B117)

Measures corrosion resistance. Standard nickel plating typically lasts 48-96 hours; heavy-duty plating can exceed 200 hours.

Abrasion Resistance (Taber Test)

Measures wear resistance through mechanical abrasion. Important for belt buckles, jean buttons, and other high-wear items.

Color Fastness to Washing

Simulates laundry cycles. Quality plating should withstand 50+ wash cycles without significant color change.
