Metal Accessories for Military and Tactical Gear: Standards and Requirements

Military and tactical equipment demands the highest quality metal accessories. Learn about MIL-SPEC requirements, corrosion resistance standards and metal choices for defense industry.
Military and tactical gear represents the most demanding application for metal textile accessories. From combat uniforms to tactical vests, every snap button, buckle and eyelet must perform flawlessly under extreme conditions — rain, sand, saltwater, temperature extremes and repeated heavy use.
Key Requirements for Military Hardware
Minimum 96-hour salt spray resistance (ASTM B117). Stainless steel or heavily plated brass are preferred. All finishes must be non-reflective (matte or subdued) for tactical concealment.
Snap buttons must withstand minimum 12 kgf pull force — significantly higher than civilian garments (7 kgf). Buckles must hold rated loads without deformation. All components tested at -40°C to +70°C.
For mine-clearance and EOD equipment, non-magnetic materials are mandatory. Brass and stainless steel (grade 316) meet this requirement. Iron components are not acceptable.
Must resist DEET insect repellent, sunscreen, fuel and cleaning solvents without plating degradation. This requires multi-layer plating with protective lacquer or inherently resistant materials.
Common Military Applications
| Product | Application | Recommended Material |
|---|---|---|
| Spring snap buttons | Uniform pockets, sleeve cuffs, cargo pant closures | Brass with OD green or coyote brown finish |
| Brass eyelets | Boot lacing, tarp ventilation, molle webbing | Brass with matte black oxide |
| Buckles | Load-bearing equipment, plate carriers, belts | Stainless steel or high-grade zamak |
| Rivets | Reinforcement at stress points, handle attachment | Brass or stainless with matte finish |
Color and Finish Requirements
Military specifications require subdued, non-reflective finishes. Common military colors for metal accessories:
- OD Green (Olive Drab): Traditional military green, still used for woodland environments
- Coyote Brown (498): Standard for modern US military equipment (PMS 4645C)
- Black: Used for tactical and law enforcement equipment
- Flat Dark Earth (FDE): Popular for desert and arid environments
- MultiCam compatible: Neutral tan that blends with camouflage patterns
These finishes are typically achieved through epoxy or enamel coating over the base metal, providing both color and additional corrosion protection.
